For a very long time, I've enjoyed playing video games of many different varieties, from pixel art 2D side-scrollers to realistic open world RPGS. Due to my experiences, I wanted to be involved in the video game industry one day but did not know to what extent. Over the last few years, I grew more interested in coding and thought that coding video games might be a good fit for me. This project was an opportunity for me to execute my interests and also talk about myself, so I created a video game autobiography which expresses my love for code, incorporates my favourite art medium of pixel art, and introduces myself to the game development community.
I really enjoy Pokémon, the games, the manga, and the lore. I love the amount of attention that goes into
the details and stats of the Pokémon and how well documented it is in the Pokédex, the in-game encyclopedia.
In my first year of coding knowledge, I wanted to put in the work to try make my own versions.
The Friend 'dex
I coded my friends into what was supposed to be something similar to the contacts app you'd find in your
phone.
The JavaScript 'dex
I wanted to push myself further than I had with the Friend 'dex and tried experimenting with making use of
the PokeAPI.
The HTML 'dex
I tried to make the Pokédex in bare HTML features. I wanted to see what I could pull off with the
limitation.
I set out to make a small interactive 'game'. While working on this, I came to realize that even simple
games require more game design than I had thought. Glad I learned this during this test idea rather than a
much larger project.
Run JavaScript
I wanted to try create an animation loosely trying to follow my idea of the game I want to make. I love art
and gameplay that is in a third-person overhead perspective, like that of the early Pokémon games.
While I was playing Minecraft for this project, I had to recognize and think as though I had an actual
camera in
hand. I needed to visually portray things in such a way as if I was writing a script at the same time
of 'filming'. I had to convey the key points of the video across while my narration was in pace with the
visual. This was a short adventure into the idea of storytelling. By holding attention and having a
series of events diced into what could be described as chapters, you can have a beginning, a middle and an
end. This story telling I can bring into future project such as gaming coding.
During my introduction to 3D modeling, using Blender specifically, this opened the door for many new projects.
Some of the projects extended beyond the software itself and I was able to carry it elsewhere.
This is an updated version of one of the first pieces I made in Blender that wasn't me just me breaking the
geometry of the objects. I wanted to make something I was familiar with and that thought process quickly led
me to making iconic items from various games I've enjoyed.

When I learned basic rigging, I didn't have an OC(original character) I could try make poseable. So I just
grabbed components of various characters I knew of and tried to 'frankenstein' them together. In a future
project, I wanted the now named Frank to interact with someone or something. I then remembered a pixel
sprite I had made as an avatar to an instagram art
account and thought it could equally provide a interesting challenge to a 32 pixel tall character a 3D
form. This pixel character has since become my avatar/mascot. I'm the IrishBlackGuy and he is IBG.
Relative to my other work, I only recently got into 3d animation and for the most part, am self taught. The
basic layout is similar or the same to software I have used many times prior. So it appeared to just be a
matter of stiching my teachings together.
These were my first blender animations with the first two being my contributution to a challenge with
friends and the
other being a representational piece called 'Emulated Technology'.
This is a piece I made for fun as my first introduction to Photoshop but I still find it funny today.
Gorillas are my favorite animal and I like Gorillaz, the band and their style. I just thought what if they
were one and the same. So I made a digital collage to produce my thought. I had a lot of fun making this,
giggling as it came together, realizing how stupid it looked.
Don't take any offense looking at this. I'm sure you're a nice person.
I remember building this, learning the fingers were positionable and I knew it would be in this position for
as long as I owned it. Any opportunity I can plug a passion of mine into a project, I will always do so.
